Last month, my eldest daughter came home from school and couldn't wait to tell
us all about the things she'd learned at school that day. She'd learned that the
highest point in the state of Georgia is at Brasstown Bald, and she wondered if
we could go and see it for ourselves. Not being one to miss an opportunity to be
outdoors, while offering an educational moment, I quickly arranged a day for us
to go and see this place, which also just happened to be less than a 3-hour
drive away from home.
We set off on a beautiful Saturday morning in September, full of excitement
for the adventure that lay ahead of us. The journey took us about two and a
half hours.
Brasstown Bald is located in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests and, at
its highest point, is about 4,784 feet. We found the visitor center and took
the hike up to the highest point from there. There was an option to take a
shuttle, but we chose to hike instead. I was unsure how our youngest would
fare, but because we'd previously hiked to the top of Amicalola Falls, we
decided to take a chance. She did phenomenally and oftentimes outran us up the
trails.
All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our day trip to Brasstown Bald and would
recommend it for families.
